Cape Herb and Spice - School Packaging Project
Branding, packaging, photography
This was a third-year project as a part of our packaging studio class, and is one of my personal favourites. The goal of the project was to rebrand an existing product to make it stand out on the shelves, with an emphasis on environmental sustainability. In order to achieve this I nixed all plastic, and used recycled cardboard for the packaging.
The premise of the Cape Herb and Spice company is highlighting the wonderful mixture of flavours and spices that have ingratiated themselves into South African cuisine over the centuries due to its historical location between the European Atlantic and Indian Ocean during the age of sail. The branding references this through the overall 'crate/cargo' shape of the logo, the stylized S.A. flag in the E, and the compass rose outline in the background.
The packaging was a bit of a labour of love, as I created my own spice mixes for the project, and soaked the strings attaching the golden tags in spices overnight to both colour and scent them, creating an immediate immersive olfactory experience for the consumer upon opening the box. The texture on the packaging is meant to emulate the old shipping/wrapping paper used throughout the 19th century, and each spice mix is colour coded for easy recognition and shelf presence.
